John Wolverton Blue constructed the Turnpike Railroad from Aurora to the Tygart Valley. Blue took charge of the construction and visited the future site of the city when he lodged overnight with the Current's family. Blue awoke and heard Margaret Current sobbing profusely over the loss of their home, flower, and the vegetable garden because of the planned right-of-way for the road. The city was formerly known as Grafton Junction and was named after John Grafton, a civil engineer.
Parades in the Community
The railroad construction workers called it Grafton because it was the point at which a number of brand railroad lines grafted to the railroad's mainline. That is the origin of the city; from the word "grafted," they used it to form the town's name. Grafton National Cemetery served the city's residents and was officially opened to provide a burial ground for Union soldiers who died in West Virginia's military battlefields and hospitals. The Federal Government selected the city to serve as the national cemetery site because of its proximity to the Maple Avenue Cemetery. Arthur Boreman was the first governor of West Virginia and officially dedicated the national cemetery, which contains more than three thousand interments. Congress made a law authorizing "maintenance and preservation" of the cemetery and observing Memorial Day services at Grafton National Cemetery. The services include a special tradition known as "Flower Strewing Day." The parade is done on Memorial Day in downtown where the children in the city place flowers at each grave marker. An important West Virginia officiates Memorial Day, and all governors who have served in the city speak at The National Cemetery during the program. Tygart Lake State Park served the city's residents and was designed to preserve recreation areas around the lake. Avas Flowers offers delivery to the park and cemetery in the city.
