Sending Flowers to Boyds, MD
The community is located in rural Montgomery County in Maryland and has more than eleven thousand residents. It is an unincorporated community in the rural parts of Maryland and about twenty-seven miles away from Washington. The parks in the city include Seneca Creek State Park, Seneca Lake, and Black Hill Regional Park. The town was named after Colonel James Alexander Boyd, who built a temporary village to house the construction workers building a railroad. Alexander Boyd was a Scottish immigrant who was the construction manager for the Ohio and Baltimore Railroad to build the Metropolitan Branch line after the American Civil War.
The operation of the railroad line began after a mill, the railroad station, and other businesses were established in Boyd. The line was demolished when the Ohio and Baltimore railroad opened a brick railroad station to construct a second track. The wooden station constructed as a replacement was taken when Commuter Rail Service was provided in the town by the MARC system. The pioneer established dairy farms in the area and constructed Boyds Negro School. The school is the only public school constructed for African Americans who are residents in Boyds town and is a Maryland Historic Site.
Parks and Schools
Boyds Negro School is located at White Ground Road and is a small, one-room schoolhouse with a potbelly stove, a blackboard, a small number of desks, and a framed picture of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Singing, spelling, reading, cooking, and weaving were taught in the school, and the Boyds Historical Society renovated it with many furnishings. Termites destroyed the wooden floorboards, and the school building was renovated on one of Montgomery County's annual heritage days. James E. Williams ran the Boyds Country Store, and it served as a market of goods for both passers-by and citizens in the town. The store also served as a meeting place for the townspeople, and Colonel Boyd constructed a second store across the road. The second store had a post office and the general store on its first floor and a dance hall and a town hall on the second floor. The building was used for additional purposes, making the town hall smaller until it was later torn down for lumbering. Families gather on the front porch of the general store with parents talking and their children playing. The store was later bought by Brice P. Selby, who allowed his customers to buy on credit and was well known as a generous and kind soul. Black Hill Regional Park serves the city's residents, and Avas Flowers offers delivery to the businesses and parks in the community. Kindly visit our website for more information.
