The city of Commerce is located in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County. The community is usually referred to as the City of Commerce to differentiate it from the common noun and is bordered by East Los Angeles on the north. The city is bordered by Vernon on the west, Montebello on the east, Maywood on the southwest, and Bell Gardens and Downey on the south. The city is served by the Santa Ana and Long Beach freeways and the Metrolink commuter rail service at the city's station.

The community was part of Antonio Maria Lugo's Rancho San Antonio and was converted into an industrial area. The Topeka, Atchison, and Santa Fe Railway constructed its mainline through the area, and the ranch remained intact. Industrial leaders came together with residents in the communities of Rosewood, Bandini, and Laguna to encourage commerce which resulted in the change of the city's name to match the goal.

Business in the City

The city was incorporated to prevent neighboring cities such as Los Angeles and Vernon from annexing industrial land for tax revenue and elected its first city mayor, Maurice Quigley The town successfully negotiated the turbulent period of deindustrialization that occurred in nearby cities such as Norwalk and South Gate, maintaining much of its goods distribution and manufacturing base. The development successfully converted former industrial land to lucrative commercial uses, and the most notable example of this act is the Citadel Outlets mall, which occupies the site of a former tire factory. Steve Craig is the owner of the Citadel Outlets Mall, and enlists other businesses to work with the city, hosts an annual Clean Up Commerce Day, and volunteers in beautifying a specific area of the community.The city has benefited greatly from the huge expansion in international trade traffic through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach due to the major rail yard within its borders.

Some of the top employers in the city are; Commerce Casino, Parsec, Smart & Final, Unified Grocers, American International Industries, Mission Foods, 99 Cents Only Stores, and Mega Toys.

Montebello Unified School District and the Los Angeles Unified School District serve the city's residents. The schools in the districts include Bandini Elementary School, Suva Elementary School, Bell Gardens Intermediate School, Suva Intermediate School, La Merced Intermediate School, Rosewood Park School, and Bell Gardens High School.
