The city is located in Benton County, Tennessee, and it is also the county seat of Benton County. Native Americans have been residing in the area since the beginning of the Archaic period, with archeological evidence to prove it. One was an excavation at Eva's area, which the Kentucky Lake currently submerges. The area uncovered some evidence of semi-permanent habitation that was dating far back to 7,000 years ago. European settlers started to arrive in the area in 1818 after the land was purchased from the Chickasaw. The town has its origin as a stopover for coaches along the Memphis and Nashville route. It was initially known as Tranquility. The community got its name Camden in 1830. The name was obtained due to the Revolutionary War-era Battle of Camden, and the city was incorporated in 1838.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy of Benton and Camden County, Sorghum was one of the important crops due to its usefulness, but production declined which led to the closure of sorghum factories, and the last one closed in 2001, The Jones Plastic and Engineering company operates a large facility in the town and is a large employer of labor. The town is regarded as a bedroom community for those employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority and also the DuPont Titanium Dioxide production plant located in New Johnsonville.
