The city is located in northwestern Gaston, North Carolina, and it has a population of more than 6,000 residents. They celebrate their German origin with the New Years Shooters, which is done at the beginning of every year with an honorary shooting of muskets and customary chant. The town is located 16 miles from Gastonia and 38 miles from Charlotte. German, Scot-Irish from the Colony of Pennsylvania migrated towards the south and settled in the area. Land grants made around and in White Pine led to a settlement development. A village began to develop on the Morganton to Charleston road later in 1863. The Wilmington, Charlotte, and Rutherford Railroad, later renamed the Carolina Central Railroad, got to White Pine. Further construction of the railroad from Cherryville was stopped due to the American Civil War; while the war was going on, the city became a terminus for the railroads in North Carolina.

Businesses in the City

After the American Civil War, the construction of the railroad continued beyond the area, and the town served as a coal and water stop. Along the rail line, residents planted cherry trees, and the engineers started to call the city Cherryville, and it was incorporated in 1881. During the 20th century, the village had become an industrial community of more than a thousand residents. More than 13 mills were opened in the town, including Burlington Industries Pinnacle Plant, Vivian Manufacturing Company, and Carlton Yarn Mills. All the cotton plants in the city are now closed. 

A truck company started operating in 1932 with one truck, hauling produce and goods from Florida to the city. The company became one of the largest cargo carriers in the United States. After more than sixty years of operation, the company was bought by Arkansas Best Trucking in 1995 and moved its operation to the city. One of the historic places listed on the National Register is the Beam's Shell Service Station, a large employer in Cherryville and a nimble maintenance company.
