The village of Port Chester is one of only 12 villages in New York still incorporated under a charter. It is located in Westchester County. The village was bought in 1660 by Thomas Studwell, John Coe, and Peter Disbrow from the Mohegan Indians and it was originally known as Sawpit for the saw pits in use during the time. In 1665 the village was claimed by both New York and Connecticut, but in 1788, the Legislature of New York ruled that Sawpit was a part of the town of Rye, New York.
