It is a hamlet located in the town of Crawford and is adjacent to Shawangunk, New York. It is within Orange County, and it falls under The Pine Bush Central School District County. The community was one of the four early nineteenth-century towns and it was previously known as Crawford, Shawangunk, and Bloomfield. The hamlet was initially a terminus for the Middletown and Crawford Railroad. The line was later bought by the Erie railroad, and it served the town till the 1970s. 

Due to reports of some unusual sightings in the mid-1980s, the town has the reputation as the UFO capital of the world, and this led to the writing of a book by Ellen Crystal titled the Silent Invasion and the Shocking Discoveries of a UFO Researcher. Over the years, the town has held several UFO festivals. The Pine Bush Central School District serves the following areas: Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan counties. The school system is one of the largest in that area as it includes two middle schools, four elementary schools, and a high school.
