Point Pleasant is a borough in Ocean County not to be confused with the nearby Point Pleasant Beach. It is a Jersey Shore community located south of the Manasquan River. The community was incorporated in 1920 on the northern end of Barnegat Peninsula. It is a long narrow peninsula that divides Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1500's the area of Point Pleasant was a ceremonial meeting ground for Lenape Native Americans. Their name for the area was "Land of Tall Timber". In 1665 the first Europeans settled in the area. Initially the area's economy revolved around farming, Fishing and the building of boats. In 1925 the Manasquan River Bay Head Canal was completed as part of the Atlantic Inland Waterway and it divided the town in half. The canal is now crossed by two lift bridges that open many times a day to let boat traffic through. The borough is considered to be a summer resort but is has over twenty thousand permanent residents.
