The city is located in Stoddard County It has more than eight thousand residents. Mr. Dex, an early settler, incorporated the city and named the community after his horse, Dexter. The community grew rapidly with the construction of Iron Mountain, St. Louis, and Southern Railway. The name of the community was changed to Dexter when a post office was established.

The National Register of Historic Places included the Dexter Gymnasium. It is one of the major parts of the town. The  Gymnasium is a historic gymnasium located in the city. It was constructed in 1940 during the Great Depression on a block donated to the school and shared the block with a library and school. It is a rectangular-shaped two-story building with a brick face and reinforced concrete. Tragedy struck the community when a tornado hit the town, and more than a hundred homes were destroyed. These were major calamities as they caused a decline in the country's economy. It took a while for the town to rebuild back to normal.

It has a wide variety of books that are given to members of the town and surrounding neighborhoods, and the fourteen ziggurat-style buttresses or columns, seven on each side of the north and south facades, were done in Art Deco style.
