It has a population of more than 18,000 residents. The city has an automotive and manufacturing history. Ford Company has two manufacturing plants in the community. Michigan Assembly Plant and Wayne Stamping & Assembly. The Sauk Trail crossed the area. Because of the trail, French and Potawatomi traders visited the area for years before settling in the place permanently. George M. Johnson built a cabin on 80 acres of land in 1824. It served as a guest house for travelers who used the trail known as Chicago Road. In 1832, Ezra Derby bought the land from Simmons and started building a community, he built a sawmill, blacksmith shop, and store, after which plots commenced in the town. The community's name was later changed to Wayne after the Revolutionary War for General Anthony Wayne. Michigan Central Railroad accelerated the development of the city. With more than 800 residents, the town was subsequently incorporated as a village.

The village has seen many industries, such as Prout and Glass Carriage Factory. In 1888 these made the city the largest sleigh and carriage producer in the United States. The first Harroun motor car was built in the community in 1916. The Michigan assembly plant started operation in 1957. Garbage and hydraulic equipment company Gar-Wood started operation 1947 - 1972. Wayne  Industries and other companies were also located in the community.

Ford Motor Company has a plant known as the Michigan Assembly Plant. The plant employs more than 200 staff. It has three major buildings for its factory purpose, and it is located close to Wayne Stamping & Assembly. Since its inception in 1957, the plant has seen many upgrades and expansions.
