Sending Beautiful Flowers to Knoxville, Iowa
The city is located in Marion County in Iowa and is the county seat of Marion County. The site for the community was chosen because it is close to the geographic center of Marion County and is a good source of timber. The city is about thirty-five miles away from Des Moines in the south-central part of Iowa and was initially occupied by Native Americans of the Fox and Sac tribes. The Fox and Sac tribes signed an agreement to sell their lands in Central Iowa, which brought about the city that was initially called New Purchase, and the first courthouse in Marion was constructed there..
The site in the area was selected by James Montgomery and Joseph Robinson, commissioners from Wapello and Scott County. It was named after General Henry Knox, a survivor and hero of the War and the city's main streets were named after Montgomery and Robinson, the county's commissioners. The city was incorporated by County surveyor Isaac B. Powers and partially by Claiborne Hall. Contractors Lewis M. Pearch and L.C. Corny constructed the first Marion County courthouse. A committee gathered together to construct a railroad for the county and the city. The residents agreed to buy shares in any railroad development that extended into the town. Muscatine, Council Bluffs, and Oskaloosa proposed the Burlington, Rock Island, Chicago, Pacific, and Quincy Railroads.
Coal mining started in the area with the Union Coal Company's mine in Flagler and was one of the most productive in the city. The Oak Hill Company in Flagler was another coal mining industry in the city. J. T James, W. A. Gamble and the White Breast Fuel Company opened a coal mine about eight miles from the courthouse and continued operating until it folded up.
