The city is located in Monroe County, Wisconsin, has a population of more than 10,000 residents, and is surrounded by the Town of La Grange and the Town of Tomah. It was founded in 1855 by Robert E.Gillett, and in 1883, it was incorporated as a city. The city was named after Thomas Carron, who was a trader at Green Bay. He was later naturalized into the Menominee tribe and was elevated to Chief Tomah. The name Tomah was adopted as a name for the settlement in Monroe County based on a local belief that Chief Tomah held one of the tribal meetings in the area.

Also, a Native American residential school was constructed by the federal government in 1891. The Tomah Indian Industrial School started operation in the area with six Ho-Chunk Children in 1893 and later grew to become one of the biggest residential schools in Wisconsin. The curriculum of the school was designed to help students adapt to modern education. English was taught, and students were sent from the town to Oklahoma and North Dakota. The school closed in 1941. The city has three major landmarks on the National Register for Historic Places.

A Transportation Hub

The city serves as a regional transportation hub because major highways come together, the Interstate 90 and Interstate 94. Both highways are very significant highways, with Interstate 90 heading to La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Interstate 94 leading north to Eau Claire in Wisconsin and the Twin Cities of Minnesota.
