The town is located in Berkeley County, West Virginia, and it has a population of more than 500 residents. In addition to its general legal definition, the name Hedgesville is now a common name for the sparse and large inhabited part of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle of the Potomac River East and northern border. The first settler in the area was William Snodgrass, and he arrived in 1700. He was buried in a cemetery at Tuscarora Presbyterian Church. An act established the town by the Virginia General Assembly in February 1836. The law gave the town a town council and a mayor. The town is on the National Register of Historic Districts. Before the 18th Century, it was predominantly home to the Tuscarora people. George W. Bush in 2004, made a re-election campaign stop and also took pictures at Hedgesville High School. Two primary highways serve the town, namely the West Virginia Route, and the other is West Virginia Route 901. Some of the notable people from the community include Gale Catlett, basketball player and coach Andy Boarman, bluegrass, and folk musician David O'Brien Martin, former US Congressman.

The Community's Schools

The Hedgesville High School is located in the town, and it has more than 1,300 students. The mascot is Stephin an Eagle, and its colors are gold and blue. The High School started as a schoolhouse in 1886. The building was demolished, and a new brick structure was erected in 1884. Also, a new high school building was constructed in 1976. The school was involved in WVSSAC Secondary School for sports events. The track team has won three titles in West Virginia in 1995, 2009, and 2017. The High School is also home to Hedgesville High School String Orchestra. Yearly orchestra members travel to the West Virginia University in Morgantown to participate in the WVU Honors Orchestra.
