It was a sparsely populated area until after the construction of the Antonia and Arkansas Pass Railway in 1887, and the area was named after Benjamin F. Yoakum, the Vice President of the company. The railroad constructed a roundhouse and also a maintenance shop that employed hundreds of workers; the town was later incorporated in 1889. The town had three cotton gins, a cotton mill, several churches, an ice factory, a general store,  a weekly and daily newspaper, and a bank. A major company called the Tandy Corporation manufactured different products such as harnesses, wallets, bridles, saddles, and other leather goods. Other factories included a cannery, meatpacking, food processing, and a dairy. Tomato farming became a major source of income to members of the community, and it earned the area the title "Tomato Capital of South-Central Texas.
