The community is located in Montgomery County and has a population of more than 2,000. It got its name from the splendor of the flowers in the environment. The Huston, East and West Texas Railway, which is now called Union Pacific Railroad, got the new name from a suggestion of Charles Cox. The company decided on a narrow-gauge spur in the 1800s. Splendora was initially known as Cox Switch. The area's population increased after W.W Burrow built a general store in town in 1883. Cox recommended the town's postmaster change the name of the city, and they agreed to change the name of the town due to the splendor of its floral environment. Splendora was incorporated in 1966.
The children in the community attend school in the Splendora Independent School District. The Texas Legislature designated Splendora ISD as part of Lone Star College, and in 1996 the territory in Splendora ISD joined the community college district.

The Splendora Independent School District falls within the public school district based in the community. The community also serves residents of the city of Patton Village. In addition, a small portion of the city of Cleveland is also under the jurisdiction of the school district. The district received a B grade from the Texas Education Agency in the 2018 to 2019 school year. The Texas Education Agency uses an A-F grading system based on data generated, and Splendora Independent School District got an 83 out of 100, which is a B. The following are the schools within the school district, namely Peach Creek Elementary (Grades PK-6), Piney Woods Elementary (Grades PK-6), Junior High (Grades 7-8), Greenleaf Elementary (Grades PK-6), High School (Grades 9-12), Timber Lakes Elementary (Grades PK-6).
