The city of La Vernia is located in Wilson County. It is on the south bank of Cibolo Creek. The Coahuiltecan-speaking tribe of Texas inhabited the area, and nomadic tribes of Apache and Comanche also inhabited it. They migrated to the Texas area in the 17th century, and one of the earliest land grants was given to Erastus Deaf Smith. He married a Mexican named Guadalupe Ruiz Duran, who was a descendant of the Tejano or one of the Spanish Texas families. This allowed him to get a grant in the form of land from the Mexican government. Europeans did not settle the area till 1837, and the first settler in the area was W. R Wiseman of Mississippi. He was one of the first to organize a Presbyterian church in the area in 1851, and the place was named Live Oak Grove due to the presence of a grove of trees nearby. Subsequently, a post office was set up in 1853 and was named the Post Oak, the new name La Vernia was given to the town in 1859, and the name was from the local Spanish vernacular for green oak trees.

The presence of Polish and German immigrants led to an increase in the population of the town, and the town had a steel gristmill, three churches, and a cotton gin. While all this was going on, the town's economy was based on cotton and corn, which is the major agricultural produce from the town to date. As time went by, the town continued to grow increasingly and was operating four churches, brickworks, and a pottery plant, and it had a population of more than 500.

Business in the Community

The town had seventeen businesses recorded, and by 1965 it had more than twenty-five businesses in town. The community was incorporated in 1967 and by 2000. La Vernia's businesses increased to more than 136. A new shopping area was built near Highway 87, and a new grocery and gas station were subsequently built in the area. The town is located in the center of the Eagle Ford Shale Play, a source of natural gas and petroleum production that is a major economic driver for development and growth in South Texas. The largest employers of labor in the town are the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative and La Vernia Independent School District.
