The neighboring areas were laid under irrigation by Medina Irrigation Company, which produced small grains, corn, and vegetables as cotton, the primary crop until irrigation stepped in. The city is known for its white corn production, which is used to make tortillas after being milled. The population increased with the introduction of irrigation and oil and natural gas discovery. Businesses flourished due to the military installations and its proximity to San Antonio, making it an ideal community for living. The area of attractions in the community includes Burnt Boot Creek, Stroud Blacksmith Shop, and Bigfoot Wallace Museum. The city has a public library, a municipal airport, a golf course, two nursing homes, and a public swimming pool. The town is a site for several businesses, including Texas Tire Test Fleet, the most prominent Spanish peanut shipping center in South Texas, and Levans Manufacturing Company.
