The city is located in Austin County in Texas and has more than five thousand residents. The town is the seat of Austin County and is located on the eastern part of the Texas-German belt. The residents of the community are known for their German culture, and the descendants of Germany have made the city their own. The community is located in the central part of Austin County and replaced San Felipe as the county seat, which was located close to the county's geographic center. Bell offered to donate one hundred and eight acres from the Nicholas league for the new city. The city was named after Thomas B. Bell, a colonist from the generation of Stephen F. Austin. Thomas and his brother donated land for the community to come to life and it has been the county seat ever since that period. The community had a creamery, two banks, an ice plant, and telephone and telegraph connections. There was a period when the number of businesses in the city gradually increased due to the large shares of receipts that came from retail sales, oil production, and light manufacturing. A temporary log courthouse and a post office were constructed at that time. The courthouse was replaced by a larger structure in the central square and several merchants, including Strother and Hermann Miller, opened stores around the square.
