Jamestown is located in Fentress County and is also the county seat. It had more than two thousand residents when it was established as a county seat for Fentress County. Clemens and his family, and John was the father of a notable author called Samuel L. Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. When they moved to Missouri, John Clemens worked in the courthouse as the first circuit court clerk and was the architect of the first jail and courthouse. Frentress County provided three companies for the Union Army and four for the Confederate Army. After the American Civil War, Tinker Dave formed his own Union scout company in Fentress county to compete against Champ Ferguson, and they fought for a long time. Sergeant Alvin C. York was a world war hero and was born in Fentress County. He established a high school and his own agricultural institute in the community and one of Tennessee's four state-funded schools.

The city operates several radio stations and has a low power station. It also has a local newspaper company called the Fentress Courier. The World's Longest Yardsale Corridor Sale is always celebrated in the community. It was founded by the former County Executive, Mr. Mike Walker, and he initiated efforts to bring vacationers and travelers from the busy interstate system to the less busy ones in Kentucky and Tennessee. Since its establishment, this celebration has grown and always promises to be better and bigger every time. The County Chamber of Commerce coordinates the world's longest yard sale called the Corridor Sale and the newest park in the town, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Alvin C.
