Delivery of Flowers to Surfside Beach, SC
The town of Surfside Beach is in Horry County in South Carolina and is popularly referred to as Family Beach. The town has a plantation called Stephen Peak's Plantation. It also has another one which is an Indigo Plantation, also called "The Ark" because of its owner, who was called "Me Aark". The town was incorporated in 1974 with an initial population of 881 residents, the initial name of the town was Roach's Beach.
Some of the key industries in the early town included feed farming and lumber, the land was sold and the new owner took over the area and named it Floral Beach in honor of his wife Flora. A group came to the area in the 1920s from Columbia and bought the land. They developed a portion of the town, after which new individuals also came to town and purchased it again, and it got its name Surfside Beach.
Early Development
A part of the beach was covered with sand dunes, and it had a quiet one-lane road that led through the beach to a nearby highway. The town witnessed a major disaster which was Hurricane Hazel. It destroyed a lot of buildings in the town, but the developers put in the effort, and it was reconstructed. The town's first grocery shop was opened by T.J Harrison, who was the first mayor of the town. An Airforce base called the Myrtle Beach Airforce Base brought about development in the community and it regained its identity as a family beach which brought about an increase in the general population of the area.
The coming of the new town government led to an increase in police protection which made the town safer for residents to live in, a better environment by implementing mosquito and sanitation control measures, and improved zoning ordinances and street lights. All the combined effort created an increase in the property value, and businesses also prospered in the community. A ban on public smoking was also brought to effect in 2007 to promote healthy living, which made it part of a handful of communities in South Carolina at the time to adopt the ban.
