The town is located in Providence County, Rhode Island and it is made of historic villages such as Hanto City, Mountaindale, Greenville, Georgiaville, Esmond, and Stillwater, and it has a population of more than twenty-three thousand residents. The town is home to a private four-year college, Bryant University, and modern-day Smithfield had its first settlers in 1636 who were British colonists. There was an active Quaker Community in eighteenth-century Smithfield. The town changed from a farming community to a production center during the Industrial Revolution.

Bryant University

The city has three public schools, including Vincent J. Gallagher Middle School, Smithfield High School, Old County Road School, and the private school in the community called St. Philip's School, a private catholic academy. Bryant University is a private school in the town. It involves programs in science and arts, and the school has few family members as alumni. The university in 1971 moved to its new location in the town after 428 acres of land was donated to it by the founder of Tupperware, Earl Silas Tupper. The famous structure of the Bryant Archway was also relocated. The Captain Joseph Mowry homestead and the old Emin Homestead occupied most of the present-day campus's land. The land was bought and farmed for more than two generations from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. A lot of the descendants of the original settlers still reside near the Bryant campus. The school also has a handful of family members as alumni of the school. It offers scholarships for students studying accounting as a yearly tribute to the Emin family. Some historical pictures of the family are still in the Alumni's house.
