The borough of Tamaqua is located in Schuylkill County, and it is located in the Central Eastern part of Pennsylvania. The community was a major hub for rail activities in the 1960s, namely the Lehigh New England(LNE) and Reading Company( RDG). The borough had a large rail yard constructed in the southern part of the borough and it had eight tracks that passed through the area. The subsequent collapse of the anthracite coal industry and the Hurricane Agnes and the Penn Central merger led to the death of the railroad. Currently, only one track is functioning, and it is under the operation of the Reading and Northern Railroad.
Tamaqua was first settled in 1799 by Burkhardt Moser who built a sawmill and shelters at the confluence of Panther Creek and the Little Schuylkill River. This area comprises the current location of the borough's downtown today. The discovery of anthracite coal led to the community expanding. It officially became a borough in 1832.
