The city was formerly called Reeseville, Gaysville, Glassley, and Cocheltown until it received its present name in 1877 during a celebration. The town was named when its centennial was celebrated, and one of the Welsh settlers agreed to call it after the Berwyn Hills overlooking the Valley of the Dee River. The Footlighters' Theater is located in the town and is a nonprofit theater that provides entertainment. It is the most significant theater on the Philadelphia Main Line.

The schools include Hillside Elementary School and Devon Elementary School, two middle schools, Conestoga High School, Tredyffrin/Easttown and Valley Forge, Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle Schools, and Catholic grade school St. Monica. In addition, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia operates Catholic parish schools in the town. Frank Johnson Memorial Park serves the Berwyn district and is used by the township government. The park consists of basketball courts, a pavilion with toilets, a "tot lot," an open field, and volleyball courts. Crabby Creek Park also serves the community district and is operated by the township government. It is located at Bodine Road in Berwyn and consists of a stream corridor buffer and an open space.
