The city is located in Tillamook County. It is located in the southeastern part of Tillamook Bay, close to the Pacific Ocean, and it has a population of more than 6,000 residents. The city is named after the Tillamook people. They were a Native American tribe that spoke a Salishan language. They lived in the area till the early part of the 19th century. Anthropologist Franz Boas identified the Tillamook Native Americans as the southernmost arm of the Coast Salish peoples of the Chinookan people who inhabited the territory between them. The name is believed to be of Chinook origin, and it refers to the people within an area known as Kelim or Elim. They spoke Tillamook, which is a combination of two dialects. The culture of the tribe differed greatly from that of the northern peoples in Coast Salish. and might have influenced how the lives of the southern tribe of current northern California.

The first European to land in Tillamook Bay was Captain Robert Gray in 1788. He landed on the Oregon coast, years after settlers started to arrive in the 1850s and the Territorial legislature established the Tillamook County in 1853, the plan of the town was done in 1862, and a post office was later constructed in 1866 finally, the city was incorporated in 1891. During the second world war, the US Navy was operating a blimp petrol station very close to the town at Naval Air Station, though it was later decommissioned in 1948. The rest of the facility is home to the Tillamook Air Museum.

The Economy

The city's economy has historically been based on dairy farms. The city is surrounded by farmland used to feed the milk cattle supplying the Tillamook County Creamery Association's cheese, yogurt, gourmet ice cream, cheddar, and other dairy products. About one million people visit the cheese factory every year. Another prominent industry is the lumber industry. Tillamook School District serves the community. It is home to seven schools:  Junior High School, South Prairie Elementary School, High School, Tillamook Bay Community College, Liberty Trask River High School, and East Elementary School.
