The city is located in Adair County and has a population of more than 4,000 residents. The city was proclaimed the Strawberry Capital of the World by the Oklahoma governor and legislature, and the city also serves as a gateway to Adair Park and Lake Tenkiller. The story of the town started in 1838 when the U.S federal government relocated a large number of indigenous people from the area. A disbandment depot was set up outside the present-day city to distribute food and supplies to the various indigenous people. The Kansas City Southern Railway constructed a rail line through the town in 1896, it led to the development of the town, and was incorporated as a town in 1897. It was named after Arthur Stilwell, the founder of Kansas City Southern Railway and a philanthropist. Westville and Stilwell vied for the county seat position in 1901 and Westville was given the county seat due to its location near two major railroads, namely St. Louis-San Francisco Railway and Kansas City Southern Railway.

The Economy of the City

The governor of Oklahoma, Charles Haskell later named the city the county seat in 1910. Strawberries emerged as a major crop of the local economy. A strawberry festival was organized, which led to the proclamation of the town as the Strawberry Capital of the World by the state governor and its legislature. As time went by, the strawberry industry became weak and the area cultivated also decreased, and the role of strawberries as the mainstay of the economy also reduced, but the town still holds an annual strawberry festival, the festival in 2015 attracted a crowd of more than 30,000 people.
