The city is in the Oklahoma City Consolidated megalopolis area and it sells and manufactures whiskey to American Indians and citizens in the dry Indian Territory. The original city was located on the North Canadian River and was destroyed in a flood before relocating on higher ground one mile south.  McLoud is located in northwestern Pottawatomie County and has more than five thousand residents. 

The city was named after railroad attorney John William McLoud when the city's post office was established. The spelling was corrected when the town was incorporated as an agricultural center. The city became a bedroom community, with many of the residents traveling to work in other towns. The city was called the "Blackberry Capital of the World" when the Chamber of Commerce delivered blackberries to President Harry S. Truman. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the Blackberry Festival began to celebrate the blackberry harvest. Blackberries grow wildly in the city, but there is no large-scale commercial farming. Another favorite local festival held in the city is the Austin Poker tournament.

The schools in the community include Early Childhood Center, Elementary Gymnasium School, McLoud Elementary School,  High School East, and West. Junior High School, the  Preschool,  Senior High School. The facilities in the schools include basketball gyms, football, baseball, softball, and soccer fields.
