In 1806 the area that was to become Parma Heights was surveyed by Connecticut Land Company surveyor Abraham Tappan. Because of the bushes that grew haphazardly throughout the area it was originally called Greenbriar. The first settlers in the area were Benejah Fay and his family. This settlement was in 1816. The community of Parma was formed in 1826. In 1911 Parma Heights became a village after separating from the larger City of Parma due to the temperance mood of the times. The village wanted to force the one tavern in the area to close on Sundays but that required a town marshall who could only be created in a village.

The population continued to grow until 1956 when the city of Parma Heights was incorporated.Today the city of Parma Height Heights is a city of distinct neighborhoods along tree lined streets.
