The area has a post office and hosts the annual Cat Square Christmas Parade, known as the "Best Little Christmas Parade in the Country." During the Great Migration, most African American families migrated into Vale and Half Acre Township in Putnam County, Georgia. The families established three black elementary schools and three migration churches in the community but moved out of the area when Mexican laborers replaced them. A notable person in the history of the community is Minnie Reinhardt, a Nave painter. The cities close to the area include Lincolnton, Newton, Hickory, Shelby, Kings Mountain, Morganton, Gastonia, Lenoir, Mount Holly, Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville, Statesville, Gaffney, and Charlotte.
