Flowering Plants Sent to Aberdeen, NC
Aberdeen is located in Moore County. Scottish emigrants were one of the first Europeans to settle in the area starting in 1745. The pull factor to the area was virgin land and bountiful hunting areas. They later created the communities of Blue's Crossing and Bethesda in the late 18th Century. While the American Revolution was on, the people that resided in the area were Loyalists though they had some issues. One of the first industries of Blue's Crossing and Bethesda was naval stores due to the abundance of pine trees in the area. These goods were moved to market at first through the Cape Fear River to Wilmington and later through a plank road. More than one thousand and five hundred residents of the city took part in the civil war, reducing the labor supply. The Augusta and Raleigh Air Line Railroad joined the community of Blue's Crossing allowing them to sell their timber and naval stores.
Malcolm J. Blue was the elected postmaster for the first post office, and Allison F. Page purchased several forested lands to construct a rail line and to clear the land for timber. It was later sold to James Walker Tufts, which turned it into the historic golf resort, Pinehurst Resort. Blue's Crossing's name was changed to Aberdeen in 1888. The main occupation in the town was tobacco farming. The city's proximity to Pinehurst resulted in a boom in the retirement and tourism industries, which remain an important part of the economy. The city's National Register of Historic Places includes John Blue House, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, the Aberdeen Historic District, and Malcolm Blue Farm. Aberdeen Creek is a tributary to Drowning Creek or Lumber River, and it flows through the middle of the city.
