The town is located at the corner of Northwest Wayne County in New York. It is named after the Great Lake on its northern border and it has a census-designated place, and a hamlet also called Ontario where all the government offices for the town are situated. Some towns close to the community include Williamson, Webster, and Walworth. The town is located on the southern border of Lake Ontario and is fifteen miles away from East Rochester. It has a rapidly developing industrial park and the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant. Robert E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant started its commercial operation on Lake Ontario's shore within the town along the Monroe County line.
Freeman Hopkins was the first settler in the area, and he built a small log cabin that sheltered himself, his wife, and nine children; their main struggle was swamps and heavy timber. The town was built as the "Town of Freetown", later, the name was changed to "Ontario". A thriving smelting operation was created when iron ore was discovered, and Lake Ontario Shore Railroad was established.
This town was built for those who value the benefits of a friendly, close-knit community and seek a high quality of life. It has three important parks: Bear Creek Harbor at Thompson Park, Casey Park, and Ontario Center Greenway Park.
Education in the Town
The Central School District is located in the town and serves the residents by providing excellent academic opportunities. The Brick Church Corners historic district was on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. Some locations and communities in the town include Union Hill, Ontario Center, Ontario-on-the-Lake, Ontario Hamlet, Furnaceville, Ginna Nuclear Generating Station, Fruitland, Bear Creek, and Lakeside. Heritage Square. A Museum is operated by the Ontario Town Historical & Landmark Preservation Society and houses industrial items and ten buildings with household items that were used by the first settlers in Ontario; it allows visitors to experience a traditional nineteenth-century settlement.
