Sending Flowers to Monticello, NY
The village is located in Thompson in Sullivan County and has more than seven thousand residents. The community lies within the Catskills region of New York and is the county seat of Sullivan County. The village was named after the house of Thomas Jefferson and is a village located in the central part of Thompson, close to the New York Route 17. It is one of the largest villages in Sullivan County, and the founding of the town began during the Pre-Civil War. A law was made to construct the turnpike road from the Hudson River to Delaware, Orange, and Ulster counties, to enhance traveling and provide passage for wood products and herds of cattle to Sullivan County. This construction brought about the founding of the area, and the village was built by John Patterson Jones and Samuel F. Jones. The turnpike company gave Samuel F. Jones the responsibility of finding the best route for the turnpike. Then Samuel went home and relayed this development to his brother, John, so this act brought about the community.
While Samuel was surveying the turnpike route, John made improvements to the land, put up a temporary shelter, started work on a sawmill, and built a gristmill for grinding their grains. Samuel got a final location for the route, and the brothers determined to build their intended village there, so the name Monticello was given to the planned village. They extracted the name from "Thomas Jefferson'' Latin words, meaning "heavenly mountain." The area became a town of shade trees, wide streets, and a public square, and the Cochecton Turnpike and Newburgh Road ran through the village. Advertisements for the new village were put into many newspapers in southern counties, which made many people take the offer to live there. One of the first settlers was a farmer by trade, Platt Pelton of Putnam County, and he constructed a temporary shanty and a sawmill. Sullivan County was part of Ulster, and John P. Jones became the first County Clerk who held several public offices and was elected state senator. John's brother, Samuel, became one of the county's first judges when a postal route was constructed, then he became the village's first postmaster. Davis Hammond built a mansion house in the village, and Eli Fairchild constructed the first iron foundry on Main St. Fairchild also built a sawmill and a gristmill on the Cold Spring Road, and all his businesses were successful for many years. Ephraim Lyon Burnham built a large tannery and was sold to Strong, Starr, and Company.
