The town was named after Prince William, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, son of King George. It was the first town to be established in the county and many other communities were formed from parts of it. At the end of the 19th century several industries were formed in the town including brick kilns, and potash and gypsum mining.

Clarence is credited by many historians as the site of the first carousel in the country. It was made by two German immigrants who moved to the city in 1870. Artifacts from these early carousels are now preserved in the Circus Hall of Fame. In 2008 the town celebrated its bicentennial.
