Baldwin was known as Hick’s Neck in 1643 when the English colonists named it that way for the first Hempstead settlers, John Spragg from England and John Hicks from Flushing. Later on, it was changed to Baldwinsville in honor for Henry Baldwin who was the sixth generation of the Baldwin family and the leading merchant of Millburn. In 1892 it was finally named Baldwin by an act of local government. In 1910, Baldwin was the first location to have built, design and successfully flown an all-American monoplane made by the Heinrich Brothers.
