Upper Saddle River is located in Bergen County and has more than nine thousand residents. The borough was ranked twentieth among the affluent cities in New Jersey. The city was formerly settled by the Lenape Native Americans and was colonized mainly by Dutch settlers who constructed mills along the city's River. Upper Saddle River was established by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Orvil Township and Hohokus Township. The name of the River came from early explorers who thought that the geography of the area resembled that of the Saddle Burn. The town was named after the valley surrounding a stream in the Scottish area of Argyll.
