Fort Dix is a United States Army post located southeast of Trenton, New Jersey. Fort Dix is a name given to the army support activity at the Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, and the census bureau considers it a census-designated place. The population of Fort Dix was 7716, which is distributed between areas located in New Hanover Township and Pemberton Township. The majority population is living in the New Hanover Township part of the CDP. The army post was established in 1917 and was named Camp Dix to honor a veteran of the 1812 war named Major General John Adams Dix. Fort Dix, formerly known as Camp Dix, was a training center and staging ground for units during the famous World War I. In 1947 it was converted into a basic training center, and during the Vietnam War, the base was expanded due to the construction of a mock Vietnam Village to provide specialized training to soldiers before deploying them. Soldiers trained at Fort Dix have participated in several other operations and wars in the recent past. The total area of the CDP is 10.389 square miles, and the weather in summers is hot and humid. The winters are mild. More than 714 families belonging to different racial backgrounds reside in the CDP.
