It is located in Gage County and has a population of more than 13,000. It is located 40 miles south of Lincoln and is also surrounded by an agricultural country. The city is one of 19 counties created by the Nebraska Territorial Legislature; when the town was established, no settlers lived within its boundaries. The Steamboat Hannibal in 1857 was carrying passengers from the Missouri River to St. Louis. The Legislature dissolved the initial Clay County; they divided it into Lancaster and Gage Counties. This decision put the town near the center of the enlarged county, making it more suitable for becoming the county seat. It still holds this position to date.

The River produced power to operate the mills that were one of the first town's industries; it also provided the city with a water source.
