The city was named after George Washington. It was inhabited by the Spaniards and initially called San Juan del Misuri. The settlement was under the Spanish Empire before it came under American Control. City. It has a population of close to 14,000 residents. The city is referred to as the corn cob pipe capital of the world. A ferry boat was licensed to move passengers and goods across the Missouri River to the north, and the area became known as Washington Landing. Although the sale of lots in 1829 led to an increase in the area's population, buyers were given a waiver if they could build the house within two years.
Anti-slavery Germans moved to the area in large numbers, and they overwhelmed the population of slave owners in the town. During the American Civil War, the city was part of the Union. After the war, the city became a major transportation center. The city has 445 historic buildings, leading to an increase in heritage tourists coming to the area. In 1934 the Washington Bridge was constructed, and it was the only bridge that spans the Missouri River in Franklin County. It was later replaced with another bridge in 2018.
Education in the City
The city has many schools, namely, St. Francis Borgia Regional High School, St. Francis Borgia Grade School, Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School, and Immanuel Lutheran School. The High School celebrated its golden anniversary for its accreditation as a four-year high school. With an increase in population in 1998, the school developed thirteen new classrooms, an elevator, additional offices, and restrooms. The school added extra facilities, such as a regulation-sized track and AstroTurf football field, to the institution in 2010. The 2012-2013 school year saw the integration of modern technology such as iPad technology to enhance learning and evolve into a paperless school.
A new multipurpose building was constructed in 2015 close to the existing gymnasium. It was named after one of the past presidents of the school George Wingbermuehle.
