The community is located at the St. Louis outer belt intersection and serves as the main transport hub within Greater St. Louis. Bridgton is a second-ring suburb with a part of St. Louis Lambert International Airport in the community. St. Charles and Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is the most populated area in the city. The town is alongside the Missouri River and it serves the city's northwestern boundary. The community is close to the major local transportation routes, and this proximity influenced the town's growth and development of the economy. These routes engage air and rail access to make the town a good location for transportation-dependent industries. The community expanded in size during the 1950s due to its annexation of surrounding areas, and the decade included the founding of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. The chamber serves the Northwest St. Louis area in which the town is included.
History of the Community
The first Europeans to settle in the area were the Native Americans and were part of the French Illinois Territory. The town formerly had two names: Marais des Liards and Village Robert. The latter was named after Robert Owen, who received a land grant from the Spanish government. The English-speaking settlers named the city Owen's Station. Bridgeton's proximity to a ferry across the Missouri River made it become a stop along the way from St. Louis to St. Charles. The town was granted a state charter during the period of emigrants seeking the major trailheads to the Santa and Oregon Fe trails.
Trans States subsidiary GoJet Airlines has its headquarters in the town. St. Mary's Church, St. Ferdinand Parish of Florissant, and St. Stanislaus Seminary serve the city's residents.
