The city is located in Cooper City in Missouri, and it was the site where an early civil war battle took place. The Missouri State Guard was defeated in the Battle of Boonville by the Union forces. The fort later became the first county seat of Howard County in Missouri. Charles Lucas and Asa Morgan formally laid out the town after the war so it was named the official county seat.

The community was held and fought over by Confederate and Union forces during the American Civil War, and the second battle was when Sterling Price in Price's Raid captured the city.
