The city is named after the Yazoo River. It is in the central city of Yazoo City Micropolitan Area, and the town is located in Mississippi. The city has a population of more than 11,000 residents. The city was founded in 1824. Its initial name was Hannan's Bluff, the name of the city was later changed to Manchester, and it finally got its name Yazoo City in 1841. The city became a county seat in 1849. The city had a yellow fever outbreak in 1878, leading to a considerable loss of lives. 

The city was destroyed by fire in 1904; according to a local legend, it was caused by a certain witch who wanted to avenge her death, but it was actually caused by a boy playing with matches and accidentally raising a house.
