The city of Ham Lake is in Anoka County, Minnesota, and is within the Anoka Hennepin School District, which is one of the largest in Minnesota. The town's first record of settlers was in 1855, and a town was established the following year. The settlers first platted the city and sold lots for a town called Glen Carey, which means beautiful valley in Scottish. It was described as a future city, but tragedy happened, and all of the town's buildings were destroyed by a fire. The tragedy led to the depopulation of the town, and almost all the residents left the town. In 1866, a Norwegian man decided to settle in the area, and Scandinavians followed him, they had slight difficulties pronouncing the name of the town, and it was renamed Ham Lake. The name was coined from the shape of the lake of the town. The first generation of settlers discovered that the soil in the town was suitable for farming, and it was better formed, unlike the rocky nature of Scandinavia soil. The city became a major area for dairy farming, and potatoes also became an import commodity for trading and sales. The potato became a very important trading commodity for the community.

Community History

The town's farmers also formed a cooperative and built a creamery, after which a lot of stores were built in the community. One of the major stores in the town was Soderquist. A large number of the initial families have moved from the town due to increased property tax. The town's families are usually connected through marriage. A service garage was also opened in the community, the Fire Department in the community was opened in 1969, and the town became a city in 1974.
