The community started in 1831. The village was initially named Sibley's Corners after the initial settler Alonzo Sibley. He settled in what is known as Commerce Township and bought approximately 80 acres of land. He later expanded his initial land to more than 350 acres. He later donated a portion of the land to create Wixom Cemetery.

Willard Clark Wixom, the son of the town's founder, was granted the right of way to develop a rail track for the Holly, Wayne, and Monroe Railroad. He located the union depot, railroad station, and a mail drop close to his property, and the development attracted a lot of businesses to the area and turned the village into Michigan's largest grain depot. The town's name was changed to Wixom from Sibley. Wixom was incorporated in the 1950s after developing the Wixom Assembly Plant. In a bid to incorporate nearby Novi township into a village, the community got incorporated as a city.
