The community started life as a small farming community in the early 1800s.The settlement is situated in Wayne County in the state of Michigan and is six miles north of Detroit.

At the beginning of its existence, the area was initially called Nabor, before it was changed to Whitewood in 1860. Nearly three decades later, when the area was officially declared a village, the name was again changed and this time it became known as Highland Park. The community is especially famous for being the first home of Ford Motors. In 1907 when the popular industrialist, Henry Ford, wanted to build his revolutionary automobile plant, he bought 160 acres of prime land inside the city. His chosen site was between Oakland Street and Woodward Avenue. There he built the Highland Ford Plant where he introduced his revolutionary assembly-line method of vehicle production.

Also, there he produced the well-loved Model T cars and various other Ford vehicles before the company moved production to Dearborn in 1927. However, the Ford Motor Company still continues to manufacture their tractors at their Highland Park site.

The presence of the Ford Plant really helped spur great economic development in the area. For instance, from 1910 to 1920, during the automobile industry boom, the municipality grew an incredible 1081 percent from 4,120 residents in 1910 to a population of 46,500 in 1927. Due to the impressive growth of the area, neighboring city Detroit started making plans to annex the community. However, the county officials didn't want this. So, in 1918, the officials quickly incorporated the village into a city to protect the area's tax base and also stop Detroit from expanding its boundary into the community.

The Community's Schools

When the two automobile powerhouse in the area - Ford and Chrysler - closed shop within the municipality in the 1990s, this severely affected the area. There was massive population loss and the local economy experienced a terrible downturn. However, in the education sector, there was significant growth. The government established the Highland Park Public School Academy System which consists of one high school and one preparatory academy. There is also the George Washington Carver Academy which is a K-8 charter school.
