It is an unincorporated census-designated city located in Tittabawassee Township in Saginaw County in the state of Michigan. It is one of the Saginaw-Midland Bay megalopolis areas. Native Americans lived in the area before the arrival of European settlers. Lumbering outposts developed in Loretta and the post office was named "Jay." It was named for Jefferson Jaqruth, the first postmaster. The outpost was at the center of the township. George Truesdale insisted on moving the post office from Loretta to his settlement, which maintained "Jay" for a long time. Its name came from "Mammy Freeland '', who operated a popular tavern used by rivermen and lumbermen on the river. The entire settlement was eventually named Freeland.  The Freeland family was also well known in the politics and businesses of the area. The airport in the city was used to hold German prisoners during World War II.

The community houses the MBS International Airport, which serves the cities of Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw.  It is a commercial general aviation airport serving the nearby cities of Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw. It is in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems in the Federal Aviation Administration. It is seen as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.

The airport was named  Tri-City Airport before it was renamed MBS International Airport. This was done to avoid confusion with the airports named the former across the United States. "Saginaw Tower" is the name that pilots call the control tower. The airport is a special important body owned by Saginaw, Midland, and Bay Counties. Its name is an initialism formed from the names of these three communities. A nine-member commission control is made up of three members from each of the members of the commission.
