The city is located in the southern part of Lake Charlevoix at the mouth of the Jordan River The city was established when a logging mill was constructed along the Jordan River nearby. The town comprised two places, namely a store and a place called South Arm. The store was opened by William F. Empey, a Canadian immigrant, and these two establishments formed the beginnings of the community.

The town boasts of and operates a feed mill, a large ironwork called the East Jordan Iron Works. Two railroads serviced the city, and the town grew into a major manufacturing center. Four industrial corporations operate within the town, and the Charlevoix and Detroit Railroad constructed their mainline on the eastern side of the community. In addition, the Southern and East Jordan Railroad started operations in the western part of the city, and these railroad connections boosted the economy of the town.
