The town of Holden is situated in the beautiful rolling hills of central Massachusetts and forty miles west of Boston. The town is about thirty-six square miles comprising watershed areas, protected open space, and recreational areas. The town was originally a rural farming area. The town started developing through textile mills which took advantage of the water power provided by the domestic streams and rivers. While these developments took place, some villages sprang up. These villages were Unionville, North Woods, Chaffin, Lowellville, Bryantville, Dawsonville, and Jefferson; all these villages became home to a growing number of immigrant families who worked in the mills.

Likewise, the Jefferson section of the town became a summer retreat for people from Boston and New York as they tried to evade the heat of the cities. The town is one of the initial communities in the state to adopt a Selectman known as a Town Manager to form a government. In 1954, The town was a part of the first regional school district in Massachusetts.

After World War II, the town changed from a growing town to a "bedroom community" to other urban centers. It also has a sewer, electric power, and public water services. The recreational department has a wide range of activities to keep people busy throughout the year. The town is rated as one of the safest communities in Massachusetts.
