The city is located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. As at 2010 the population of the city is estimated at more than 6,000. Michael Joseph Milton was the founder of the community in 1825. The Milton family was a pioneering family in the area and they came from Alabama. A post office was established in the area in 1856 by the Federal government in recognition of the steady growth of the town. The post office was renamed after a legislator Dr. William Elliot Walker who was a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate States of America. The Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal named Walker a city in 2011. The city also has a technology center dedicated to improving technology in the city and it is named The Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center. It is named after a former Louisiana commissioner of education Sally Clausen.
