It was established as Dunnville but changed to Oakdale when the Iron Mountain, St. Louis, and Southern Railroad were constructed. After the establishment of the town, it had two hotels, ten stores, a livery stable, a dentist, a physician, four telephone facilities, a telegraph, fraternal orders, and but no saloon. The city had five sawmills: the Calcasieu River Lumber Co., the Oakdale Lumber Co., Forest Lumber Co., the Bowman-Hicks sawmill, and Hillyer, Deutsch, Edwards Inc. The mills in the area ship over seven hundred boxcars of lumber monthly and are the largest in Louisiana.
