Franklin is a small city located in St Mary Parish, Louisiana, and has a population of more than 8,000. It is located on the Bayou Teche, southeast of Lafayette, and it is part of the Morgan City Micropolitan Statistical Area and the Lafayette Acadiana combined statistical area. The city was named after Benjamin Franklin, and the city was founded in 1808 as the Carlin Settlement by Joseph Carlin and his family, a French-born pioneer. The town became the parish seat in 1811 and was later incorporated in 1830. Some of the early settlers in the city are Acadian, Germans, French, Irish, and Danish; the town has a culture and architecture influenced by the English that settled in the area after the Louisiana Purchase.  First United Methodist Church was established in 1806, which made it the first Protestant church in the state of Louisiana.

Bayou Teche was the Main Street in Acadiana in the 1830s, connecting one plantation to another; the sugar cane planters in the south were among the wealthiest agriculturists in the south. The mansions and grand plantation homes are evidence of the riches from the sugar plantations; most of the magnificent structures in the town are still well maintained and preserved, which has given the city a unique architectural flavor and feel. The Franklin Historic District is located on the National Register of Historic Places, and it has more than 420 notable structures, some of which are Arlington Plantation House, Dixie Plantation House, and Alice C. Plantation.
