Saint Matthews is a city in Jefferson County which was separately incorporated as a home rule-class city and has over seventeen thousand residents. It is the twenty-third largest city in the state. European Americans first settled the area in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War. Colonel James John Floyd of Virginia conducted an early survey of the area and bought 2,000 acres. The settlement was initially called "Floyd's Station". In the early 19th century there were several plantations and the area was known as the "garden of the state". Tobacco and hemp were the major crops grown and there was a substantial horse-breeding business.

Its current name was adopted in 1850 with the completion of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church, the first church in the area. It was a stop on the Louisville, Cincinnati and Lexington Railroad. In the early 20th century its major crop was potatoes and for a while it was a major center of potato production in the entire United States. The area began changing to a more residential character with the coming of the automobile and mass transit. It was finally incorporated as a city in 1950.
